The
celestial cow Kamadhenu - bestowed of any kind of boon has four venerable
daughters, and one among them is called Patti. This divine cow offered ardent
prayers to Lord Siva to get over her problems once, and so this place is called
Pattisam or Patteswaram. The presiding deities are called Dhenupureeswarar and
Mother Gnanambikai. These powerful divinities have been worshipped from
Kritayuga onwards. And according to sthalapurana, Sri Rama offered prayers to this Dhenupureeswarar
to rid himself off Brahmahatya dosha of killing Ravanabrahma, and his sin
vanished by the grate of Lord Siva. Sri Rama then created a pond with his mighty
arrow in recompense for the grace he received.
It
is a big temple with four tall gopuras and has mini shrines installed with
several potent daivams, among them Shanmuga with Valli Devasena is quite
grand and is receiving adoration by all the visitors. Another object of
adoration is the icon of Bhairavamurti, which is unusually big and awe inspiring
in facial features.
