  MADHUPIRI - KANKALI DEVI MANDIR

Kankali is a corrupt from of Kamsakali. Legends say that she was born to Yasoda and predicted early death of Kamsa, when he tried to kill her on this spot forming the jail, where Devaki and Vasudev were imprisoned. This place is deemed very sacred and auspicious for worship. The story goes that there was a Jain temple and Bouddha Vihar in the dim past and later were converted into a temple by Hindus. It is named Kankah Tila after building a temple for Kankali devi. Due to ravages of time, the temple went out of existence. And the ruined site was bought by a pandit called Tularam from Raja Sate Lakshmi Das.

As he could not renovate by himself, he thought of raising a garden and started digging operations. And lo! he heard sounds from unknown place - "Stop, Stop". It was the Mother's voice and she did not like desecration of that holy spot. Disregarding the aerial voice, he continued only to meet his death in a short period of five days. It caused tremors in the public and none dared to do any damage to the ruined shrine. Even before Tularam's effort, the then owner Raja sate Lakshmana Das endeavored to build a temple and install the image of his choice after demolishing the temple He too could not, due to mysterious reasons.
