It is a hill temple enshrining the images of Kandan - a popular name
for Subrahmanya and hence the hill is called Kandagiri. The temple owes its
existence to a highly evolved soul, who dedicated his whole fife to
worshipping of Muruga. He lived in a cave at the foot of the hill. Popular as
Siddha, this devout Murugabhakta built a temple atop the hill with public
donations.
AS
a mark of gratitude, a befitting small shrine was built later
after
his demise, so there are two sannidhis on the hill. In the Dandayudhapani
temple, the image of the Moolavar gives darsan with Vel in his hand. So he is
called Dandayudhapani. Regular festivals attract huge crowds. Visitors pay
respects to the Siddhar Samadhi after availing darsan of the Dandayudhapani.
It
lies between Namkkal and Thurayur of Tamilnadu, accessible by bus.
