The
temple has many oddities and some of which are contradictory to the
traditional building pattern. It faces west, and there built
opposite, Balipitham and Dwajasthambham, which according to
Vastusastra and inauspicious. As found in all temples, it has a
strong Prahari, broad mahadwara, tall tower, pradakshinapatha,
mukhamandapa, antarala, and a ground vimana on the garbhagriha,
built in the Gajaprushtakara style. They are built at different
times by both Pallavas and Chululyas. The first thing that greets
rather surprises us when entered, is the five-foot-high black
granite Sivalinga resembling the erected male genital organ.
