GURUPAVANAPURA

THE JANAMEJAYA EPISODE

Another legend has a different version, though agrees with the fundamentals of the origin of the Vigraha. It begins - when the celebrated Kuru King Parikshit, the scion of much-famed lunar dynasty died of snake bite, his valorous son Janamejaya performed Sarpayaga to put an end to the whole brood of Nagas. Millions of snakes were burnt, but their wholesale destruction brought him woe - he became a victim of a virulent type of leprosy. All attempts at cure failed. He bewailed. He was advised then to worship the image' of Lord Krishna for sure cure.

Search was instituted at once for securing the powerful idol of Krishna, submerged in the ocean after the exit of Krishna. When efforts were crowned with success due to the invaluable assistance of Brihaspati and Vayu, the Vigraha has installed at this place, found appropriate for such divine image. Janamejaya was cured of his incurable leprosy by his matchless austerity, and long penance he did here. The Pouranic episode cemented the faith of devotees in the Lord; thenceforth ardent devotees are taking vows before the idol to visit the temple again and again to make offerings in token of the relief from dreadful diseases. As there number is on the increase miraculously, it is testifying to the divinity embedded in the Vigraha.
