The
news of Martin's exploits, or stage of campaign did not reach Lady
Martin even after a long time. Her attempts to find out her
husband's safety did not bear fruit. She was upset - lost mental
poise and became apprehensive. Everyday ended with a grave doubt and
every minute despair roused her anxiety. Restlessness heightened her
misery.
In
a mood of exasperation, she started riding her horse aimlessly to
brace her mind on the river bank. The horse, pitying her, as it
were, brought her to a shrine. It was a modest one, and at that
moment it was reverberating with chorus singing to the accompaniment
of instruments. The air was surcharged with clanging to temple bells
and singing of holy songs by !he devotees. She enquired many things
about the temple and God. She was told that it was Siva mandir that
the presiding deity was Mrityunjaya, who when prays devoutly saves
the devotees from untimely death
and removes all fear.
