It
was in the Moghul period, particularly during the region of bigots,
the temple was threatened with invasion. Spineless theists Bewailed
their lot when they heard the march of army making temples treasury
as its target. Some left their homes and others prayed to the
abundant mercy of the Lord for protection of life, property and
honour. Among them, two persons dedicating their lives to writing
and propagating the Lords sports stood in the fore front for
reverent mention. Knowing that physical might against blood-thirsty
day-light robbers would not solve the problem, they directed their
steps into the innermost part of the sanctum and ripped opened their
shattered hearts o Lord Narasimhaswamy. Their unbearable pathetic
affliction and irrepressible grief flowed down in the form of verse,
appealing to HIM or instant succour of driving out the iconoclasts
and protect the sanctity of
the shrine. Poem after poem, applauding the Lord's miraculous acts
that saved thousands of grief stricken devotees in the past slipped
down from the lips of Kurmanath and they were copied at once by his
companion Hariharadas. Each was a dazzling gem embodying a series of
anecdotes, like His saving Prahlad, Draupadi, Gajendra, Kuchela,
Dhruva etc., when caught in the whirlpool of misery. When the frenzy
reached climax on exhausting all the known acts of His relief, he
insinuated Him that His attributes, like anadharakshaka and
aapadbhandhava would go bereft of meaning. The refrain of each poem
- "Vairi Hararamha! Simhadri Naarasimha" reiterates His
formidable stand against enemies.
