Now
we are at the sanctum sanctorum of Simhachalam temple dedicated to
Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy - the scene of an august
occurrence. The time of action - a certain year in the Moghul
period; sorry, precision eluded my grasp. Literary evidence is not
only inscribed in sweet scintillating poetry, but is entrenched in
the deep marrow of Telugu theist community. Minstrels and
Bhagavathars regale, better say lull the listeners with their
melodious voices, those enchanting devotion soaked poems composed by
the famous twin poets Gokulapati Kurmatha and Aadurthi Harihara Das
in praise of the presiding deity - Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha
swamy, when the ruthless Moghul iconoclasts were galloping towards
the temple with swords and torches in their heads. The
heart-rending, tear-stained appeal for mercy moved the Lord so
intensely that He at once dashed out of His Vaikunt Mahadwar and
reached the place not in human form but in the shape of honey bees -
the tiny winged creatures that drove out the well trained and fully
equipped ruthless Moghul army from the temple precincts upto the
Tummeda Mitta, one of the land marks in the present Visakhapatnam
city.
