ANTIQUITY
From
time immemorial, Prayag is a much-venerated holy place, sanctified by the
association of Vedic seers and incarnated celebrities. Rig Veda says "Those
who bathe at the confluence of the white and black rivers-the Ganga and Yamuna
go to heaven those of firm mind who give up their bodies here, attain
immortality". Another! Pulastya's description, besides bringing out the
traditional importance of this land, fixes its bounds too. He says-"The
land between the Ganga and Yamuna is called the waist, the middle part of the
earth; and Prayag which is the most sacred, luxuriant and prosperous place is the
fertile part of the Mother Earth. "Hence Prajapati's selection for
performing a great sacrifice on this punya dharithri.
