And very few cities in the world can claim a tradition as old as Madurai and due to glorious history it made and exemplary culture it nurtured it is considered as the Athens of the East.  Illustrious Roman and Greek emperors established commercial links with it and glorified their nations with the good-will of the enlightened Pandyan rulers of this city, when talent flowered and spread its fragrance to the four corners of the world.  By and large, it was and is deemed the thriving  centre of Tamil culture.  And the pulse of South India.
