There is no dearth of authentic information about this famous thirtha kshetra.  Right from the Vedic period to the present times, there are hundreds of books enshrining its sanctity.  Besides the devotional literature, Government records bear eloquent testimony to its sacredness.  

There are several references in the Rig Veda about this.  Epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharatha, Smritis like manu Smrithi, parasara Smrithi have devoted hundreds of pages eulogizing its importance.  Saint poets and minstrel - musicians, like Gnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasu Sekkizhar, Kambar, Arunagirinathar, Thayumanavarpoured out their souls in song shedding light on the spiritual heights of this mighty kshetra.
