VISNU SAHASRA-NAMA

As many as ten of them are listed: 

(i) Insulting those who are good, and speaking ill of others, are contrary to the practice of nama-japa

(ii) The devotee should not make any distinction between Siva and Visnu, in respect of either their attributes or their names. 

(iii) Disrespect shown to the preceptor is also a grave offence. 

(iv) So also, derision of the Vedas and other sacred literature. 

(v) The Divine Name should be regarded always as the supreme truth; it should not be looked upon as arthavada, mere eulogy. 

(vi) It is a true that the repetition of the Name will remove all sins but on that account one should not use the Name as a cloak for the commission of sins. 

(vii) The cultivation of virtues such as non-injury, truth, non-stealing, etc., should not be neglected. 

(viii) Observance of religious vows, etc., should not be given up nonchalantly, imagining that the Name will do. 

(ix) Those who are, devoid of faith should not be initiated into the practice of nama-japa.

(x) He who believes in the greatness of the Name should not behave in a way which is devoid of love; he should not be governed by the conceits of 'I' and 'mine'.
