NATIONALISM : THE FIRST PHASE

Swami
Vivekanand represents the next phase in the development of the religion
of patriotism. Three points are notable in this regard - his
identification of Mother India with the supreme God; his attempt to
reintroduce the Kshatriya element in the Hindu psyche; and his
conviction that India was destined to be teacher of the human race
in the spiritual realm. On the first, he said:
- So give up being a slave. For the
next fifty years this alone shall be our keynote - this our
great Mother India. Let all other vain gods disappear for the
time from our minds. This is the only God that is awake, our own
race - everywhere his hands, everywhere is feet, everywhere his
ears, he covers everything. All other Gods are sleeping.20
On the second, he said:
- You will understand Gita better
with your biceps... What I want is muscles of iron and nerves of
steel, inside which dwells a mind of the same material of which
the thunderbolt is made. Strength, manhood, Kshatra-virya and
Brahmateja.21
