THE CURRENCY OF DHARMA

Forceful separation always brings tears to the eyes. Pluck an unripe mango from its stalk. You will see it 'weeping' at the point where it has been plucked. But a ripe fruit drops down of its own accord, detaching itself from its stalk without a 'tear'. The unripe mind, which attaches to the tree of samsaara sheds copious tears when forcibly separated from the things of the world. The Jnaani 'who is ripe in mind renounces the world of samsaara resigning all his desires.

An unripe fruit is bitter to the taste it is sour. But a ripe fruit is sweet. The jnaani who has renounced enjoys the sweetness of saanti while the life of one who has not acquired jnaana is bitter and sour. It is up to us to convert all our powers of thought, speech and action into a currency, which will be accepted throughout the universe. The coinage of each particular kingdom is stamped with the emblem of that kingdom or the head of its ruler and is legal tender in that kingdom only.

But the currency that is dharma bears the impress of the spirit, of God whose sway extends to all the worlds. We should convert all our powers into currency notes of universal superlative denomination, which will stick, not to our boy, but to our aatman and which we can carry quite easily. It must not be a note of debt, which will be followed by a warrant of arrest.
