SAMSKARAS

By this Samskara, the boy is made ready for learning the Vedas. As a mark, he is given the sacred thread to wear.

The mantra taught to him on this occasion is called Gayatri. It is the essence of all the Vedas. The Guru teaches him this mantra.

Rishi Viswamitra envisioned this mantra. It is prayer to God to give great intellectual powers.

By repeating this mantra morning, noon and evening, the boy’s memory power greatly improves.

After the Upanayana the boy stayed in olden days with the Guru for several years and learnt the Vedas.

The next important Samskara is marriage. It is called Vivaha. This word means carrying the responsibility of running a family.

The object of marriage in India is to perform dharma and serve both society and our ancestors.
