HINDU PHILOSOPHY

As a man brings up a family and makes his son sit at his right hand when judging his servants or managing his estate, so does his God. Most of the ceremonies of popular religion in all countries are designed on this principle. It was repugnance to this rather vulgar religious sentiment, which makes heaven a sort of glorified earth that made some of the great minds of the world either silent on the subject of God or sceptical about religion in general.

But as men's minds improve, their conception of God becomes elevated, and many of the anthropomorphic traits are gradually dropped. By slow degrees God comes to be known as a spaceless and timeless Being. But even the most cultured of us, for the simple reason that, we are persons, have to conceive of God, for purposes of prayer and worship, in terms of personality and interpret our feelings towards Him in terms of human affections. Else great spiritual want would be left unsatisfied.

At the same time we owe it to the Supreme Spirit that in our moments of insight we impose on it no such limitations as we are suffering from. We should clearly recognize that God, who is the object of our worship and knowledge, couldn’t be the Absolute, which is above such distinctions as subject and object. We should fearlessly admit that Theism is only a half-way house and remember that the greatest of the Hindu sages did not stop at this but pushed forward and tried to see God as He is, and not simply as He is to us.
