DHARMAPURI |
|
Dharmapuri is not
only one of the oldest villages of Andhra Pradesh but also comparatively a big one
considering its inaccessibility. It has about 2,000 houses, which are built in the old
fashion. The village is a famous and renowned one, as a centre for Vedic studies, and for
several centuries in the past Sanskrit pundits have emerged from this village. The
tradition and environment of the place prove that it was a great seat of learning of Vedic
and Sanskrit studies in the past. The most
important temple in Dharmapuri is the temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Narasimhaswamy.
This holy place with its presiding deity is mentioned in the Brahmanda Purana. There is an
un-published palm leaf manuscript in Sanskrit with the title "Dharmapuri Kshetra
Mahatmyam" describing the Puranic story and the greatness of this Lord in great
detail. |
