There is a
perennial spring locally called Gangadhara, on this hill, and it is said to have medicinal
properties also. The temple has got valuable gold and gem-set jewelry valued at nearly six
lakes of rupees, the most important and interesting being the gold ornamental Kavachams
valued at a lakh of rupees and a gem-set emerald Padakkam offered to the Lord by the
famous Vijayanagar king Krishnadeva- raya in commemoration of his victory over the Kalinga
king. There is a Sthalapurana for the temple, which is divided into thirty two chapters,
and the original is said to be given in the Skanda Purana by Sri Vedavyasa Bhattaraka
through Jaimini Maharshi. |
