The Kalika Purana
and the Yogini Tantra enjoin blood sacrifices and various esoteric rites. The ritual
consisted of human sacrifices, which is horribly superstitious. Its essential feature is
known as Pancha Tattva or the five elements, the Panca Makaras, the five Ms, because
they begin with that letter, namely, Madya , (wine). Mamsa (meat), Matsya (fish),
Mudra (parched grain), and Maithuna (copulation). They
also sought salvation through sexual intercourse with women. The Kalika Purana also speaks
of Virgin Goddess of beauty and sex. In the selection of Virgin no caste distinction was
observed. "The ambition of every pious follower of this system", says Dr.
Bhandarkar, "is to become identical with Tripura Sundari and one of his religious
exercises is to habituate himself to think that he is a woman and it ought to be the aim
of all to become a woman."7
