Introduction The district of 24 Parganas adjoins Calcutta and covers an ancient
area. Large number of very old bricks and pieces of pottery, rectangular copper coins and
terra cotta have been found which definitely suggest the possibility of more early
antiquities if excavations are done. The area was under the reputed Maharaja Pratapaditya
of Jessore. There are a number of villages now in decadence but which obviously had once
seen prosperous days. A rapid view of some of these villages will be some interest.
