TEMPLES IN 24 PARGANAS |
|
At Halisahar there
is a remarkable Ganesha image worshipped with great pomp. It is a two-feet high image
seated in Padamashan pose. Out of the four hands two are broken. The polish is still
remarkably fresh. Halisahar was the place of residence of Ishwar Puri an intimate friend
of Sri Chaitanya Deva. Halisahar was once swept by the wave of Vaishnavism and there are
quite a few
Vaishnava temples. A large number ofSiva temples
are now in a decadent condition although the temples were superbly executed and have
various scenes from the Puranas sculptured. Besides Siva temples there is a large number
of Shakti temples like Shyama Sundari,Siddheswari, Rakshakali, Rudra Bhairavi etc. The
fishermen do Kartik Puja with great pomp particularly.
Among the Gramya-devatas at Halisahar we find worship of Shitala Devi, Ola Bibi etc. These
Gramya-devatas are popular with people of all classes and communities. Some of the old temples in this district are well preserved and the
temples attract thousands of persons. Some of the old temples are abandoned and are
declining rapidly. Many of the images have been stolen away too. It is because some famous
old temples still continue to be visited by thousands of villagers while a few others
remain completely ignored that this article refers to them as of light and shade. |
