THE TEMPLES IN BANKURA

The temples of Bankura district have recently been highlighted in a number of articles and books in the Bengali Press.2

The background of the temples in Bankura district is supplied by the demographical details in Bankura district is supplied by the demographical details and the culture-complex. This is a district where different religious creeds have quarreled with each other for some time and then came to an adjustment followed in some cases by a complete re-orientation.

There are three district currents of religious waves that stand out prominent in this district.  The religious sentiments and institutions of the non-Aryans like the Santals, Bagdis, Bauris, etc supply this current.  In this group we find the worship of deities like Marangburu, Singbonga, Gonsai-era, Barpahar, Kudrasini, Bhadu,
etc.
