THE TEMPLES IN BANKURA

In the second religious current we find a blending of the non-Aryans on the Aryans.  Such deities are Dharmaraj, Mansa,Chandi etc. Lord Siva could also be said to be one of the deities very popular among the people who could be grouped under the second religious circle. The third current, which is pure Hinduism, is represented by deities like Vishnu, Lakshmi, Durga Krishna, Radhika etc.

The impact of similar historical details as given in the coverage on the temples in Midnapur district and Birbhum district is also applicable to this district. The Mallah
kings of Bishnupur have had the largest impact on the temple history of this district.

The Mallah kings were very largely influenced by the various non-Aryans religious thoughts, practices and institutions. The same impact continues. The current demographical details of the district show that there is still a very strong representation of as many as 16scheduled castes and the Santals, a scheduled tribe.
