THE TEMPLES IN BANKURA

The Santals and the scheduled castes and communities have still preserved their indigenous religious ideas, thoughts and institutions. They have even been able to influence the higher Hindu castes.Out of some of the indigenous religious deities of the Bauris like Mansa, Dharmaraj, Bhadu, Mansingh, Barpahari and Kudrasini, we find that Mansa and Bhadu have already been adopted with some changes in the hierarchy of Hindu gods, Dharmaraj and Siva are practically one and the same deity.

The Karam festival is celebrated by the Bhumij caste and has a strong affiliation in ceremonial details with Itu puja of the Hindus celebrated in the month of Agraha- yana. Both the priests at the middle of the dancing floor plants these of a karam tree and a pitcher filled up with earth is placed under the branch. The unmarried girls of the village scatter seeds of many kinds on the earth in the pitcher and when they sprout the girls put them in their hair and
pass the night in songs and dances.  Karam festival is common in Chota Nagpur.
