This was done
after the passing away of Lord Buddha. Buddha had also spent some rainy seasons in
Rajgriha. Near Rajgriha is the site of the famous Nalanda University, which became the
most important centre of Buddhist culture in the later phase of the Mahayana school of
Buddhism. For several centuries Nalanda University had attracted scholars from different
parts of the world. This University is associated with great Buddhist scholars
likeNagarjuna, Shilabhadra and others. Shilabhadra was the teacher of the Chinese
traveler Hieun- Tsang. The University fell a victim to the Muslim zeal for destruction.
Buddha had also passed through Pataliputra, the modern Patna. Pataliputra at that time was
an important but small township on the bank of the Ganga River. Pataliputra was, however,
destined to play a very important role in the period of later Buddhism. Pataliputra, was
the headquarters of King Asoka, who had sponsored the spread of Buddhism, far and wide, to
different parts of India and beyond.
On the other side of the river Ganga in Bihar, there are a number of places, which are
intimately associated with the Buddha's movements and with the visits of Asoka in a later
period. Buddha visited Vaisali, which was the headquarters of the Lichchavis. |
