MAHABODHI |
|
There is no
dearth of accommodation at Buddha Gaya now. There are Dormitories, Inspection Bungalows
and Circuit Houses at Buddha Gaya. A number of Buddhist Missions have set up their own
monasteries near the Mahabodhi temple and Buddhist pilgrims can find accommodation in
these monasteries too. On the occasion of the celebration of the 2,500th birth anniversary
of Lord Buddha, many great improvements were done to the temple and the surroundings.
Buddha Gaya has facilities of electricity and a small bazaar. There is a police thana and
a dispensary as well. Besides the Mahabodhi temple, which will be described later, there
are other objects of interest, which should not be missed. There is a world-famous sacred
pipal tree by the side of the Mahabodhi temple. It is said that the present tree is in
succession to the pipal tree under which Lord Buddha prayed and obtained spiritual solace.
Saplings of this Bodhi tree have been taken with great reverence and installed in a large
number of Buddhist countries.
Vajrasana, which is between the temple and the Bodhi tree, is a seat of stone. It is
said that this seat marks the actual site where Gautama sat and prayed and became the
Buddha. The Animeshlochan Stupa has been erected at the site where Lord Buddha stood and
gazed at the sacred Bodhi tree after the Enlightenment. |
