MAHABODHI |
|
The Cankamana
marks out the spot where Lord Buddha used to walk in a pensive mood. The Ratnaghara,
within the temple precincts, is the room where Lord Buddha would sit and meditate. 'The
stone railing round the Vihara was set up by theSungas. It is understood that there used
to be a continuous stone railing all round the Mahabodhi temple. Now only the portions
to the south and west remain. The visitors will also be attracted by a number of small
carved stone stupas round about the temple. These were mostly fixed up when the temple was
renovated. There is a large tank for bathing to the south of the Vihara, which has now
been renovated.
It has been mentioned that the Buddha Gaya temple somehow, came into the hands of the
Giris, a Saivite monastic order. Quite a few purely Hindu images have also been installed,
at various places, in the Mahabodhi temple. There is a Pancha Pandava temple to the left
side of the entrance to the Mahabodhi temple. The images are, however, of the Bodhisatvas.
