As
regards the antiquity of the seat, nothing is stated in the inscription. Kartikarashi, the first historical head of these Pashupatas, cannot
have succeeded to his office much before the year A.D. 1225 since the third was alive in
1287.
The next three verses are not important and most of thern
are badly mutilated.
Verses 23-34. -"Tripurantaka's pilgrimage was directed
to the Himalayas where he visited Kedara, i.e., Kedarnath in Garhwal and there worshipped
Shiva with lotuses taken from the pure Brahmasaras. Thence he turned southwards and bathed
at Prayaga, modern Allahabad at the confluence of the Ganga and the Yamuna (verse 26).
From Allahabad he wandered to the Shri parvata (verse 27) which he circumambulated in the
orthodox fashion, and where he was blessed by the aspect of divine Mallinatha. The
mountain seems not to be identical with the southern Shriparvata. Shrishaila must lie
south of Allahabad and north of the Narmada. |
