RISE OF A DESTROYER |
|
Mahmud's
invasions up to A.D. 1022 were really three wars. The first was directed against the
Shahis. It lasted for about eighteen years and ended in the annexation of most of the
Punjab. The second was directed against Kanauj, which was only a Pyrrhic victory. The
third was against Vidyadhara Chandella, and Mahmud gained nothing out of it. Vidyadhara had succeeded where the heroic Shahis had failed. Later
Muslim chroniclers have altered the aspects of these frustrated attempts into successful
religious wars against the holy shrines of India. Frustrated in the east, the ambitious
Sultan turned south. |
