KANYAKUMARI

These things were spread out, at the eleven holy ghats of the Cape in the presence of the Goddess. These eleven are Sukra, Savitri, Gayatri, Kali, Vani, Ganapati, Kannika, Matru, Pitru, Brahman and Chali. It is stated in the Puranas-that those who make a pilgrimage to Banaras should also visit this place to complete their pilgrimage.

As the Virgin Goddess is a part of the Sakti of Kasi Viswanatha, it is ordained that to fulfil their vows pilgrims should visit both Banaras and the Cape to cornplete their pilgrimage to the shrines of Siva and His Sakti.

The extreme southern point of India is marked by Pitru Tirtha and Matru Tirtha. 'They are two rocks lying half submerged in the sea. One can reach the rocks easily at low water as iron poles and chains have been fixed on the way as a measure of protection.
