According to
legends, the formation of the fertile portion of land lying between the Malabar Hills or
Western Ghats, and the Arabian Sea, spreading from Gokarnam to Cape Comorin was due to the
' Sage Parashurama. Parashurama, the son of Sage Jamadagni, obtained a boon by
propitiating the Sun God that the area of the sea covered by the throw of mighty axe
would be reclaimed as an inhabitable country. Accordingly, the sea receded and the rich
and luxuriant Malabar Coast came into existence. The one distinguishing feature of the
sand at the Cape is that it is of various colors. The modern scientists call it monozite
sand. At present, Uranium, which is most valuable for generating atomic energy, is being
extracted from this sand. Will it be far wrong to say in this correction that the Sakti or
Power of the Goddess Mother is still scene in the sand which, according to the legend, is
but the transformation of the dainty colored dishes cooked for the heavenly guests on the
occasion of her proposed marriage? 'The Atom, we all know, is the smallest
practicle. |
