| There is
another story connected with the name of the place. Once Lord Siva was narrating to
Parvati Devi the importance of the sacred ash and panchakshara. He told the following
story. There was a vicious man near Madurai, who was the embodiment of all sins and evil
motives. He ruthlessly murdered people and waylaid all that he met. Even ladies were not spared. Poor orphan girls were raped and
intention. Thereupon her husband chased him, cuts off his head and threw it into a forest.
A dog, which was loitering there, saw the decaying body and started eating it. As the legs
of the dog, to which some particles of ash were sticking, happened to come into contact
with the trunk of the vicious man, he got moksha. |
