| Opinion is
divided as to the date of the construction of this temple. The view held by historians is
that the present temple of Kapaleeshwarar is not one referred to by Tirujnana Sambandar in
his Tamil Iyrics, and that the present temple must have been built only about 300 years
ago. As the time of Sambandar is generally accepted to be the 7th century A.D.,
the old temple must have been built in Santhome area near the beach, which was looted and
destroyed by the Portuguese. Many evidence may be cited in support of this argument. The
images and sculpture specimens of this temple and the style of architecture adopted are of
those relating to recent years. |
