The
momentous feat of swallowing halahalam and the unique demonstration
of his peerless concern for lokakalyana took place at a sacred spot
now goes by the name of Nanjangud, a supreme mokshapuri and a
premier pilgrimage centre of our Punya Bharat, luring lakhs of pious
people from time immemorial. It has many unique features that raised
it to the highest pedestal amongst those of similar shrines. It is
here Parasurama did penance for expiation of the sin of matricide,
it is this place that witnessed the wedding of Mahalakshmi with
Mahavishnu and it is here the dreadful demon Kesi was thrown into
yagnakund by Lord Maheswar. The emergence of this place as an
unparalleled thirtha kshetra of eternal significance has a fantastic
beginning.
Enshrined
in several sacred scriptures, eulogized by Veda Vyasa; embodied in
the archives; endowed by renowned princes; embellished by
illustrious sculptors and emancipating millions of devout
religionists, this sacrosanct Yatrasthala has formed, as it were,
the pendant of the necklace adorning the Goddess of temples that
Karnataka is.
