BHISHMA
KUND
It
is about 5 Kms off the Kurukshetra tank. The famous episode of
quenching the thirst of Bhishma Pitamaha, while lying on the bed of
arrows is attributed to this. The epic relates that Bhishma felt
thirsty while on the ampa sayya, and asked for water. Thereupon,
Duryodhana ordered the attendant to bring water in a gold vessel,
but Bhishma refused on the ground that he no more had any connection
with the mortal world. When helplessness gathered dark clouds around
his brows, Arjuna, the savyasachi pierced the earth with his mighty
arrow. There gushed out then patalaganga, like the fountain at the
turn of the knob. It quenched the Pitamahas thirst, curbed the
hollow imperial power of Duryodhana, and occasioned the exhibition
of supremacy of Arjuna. And as it is associated with the last days
of Bhisma and his Dharmopadesa, so there is unusual craze for
visiting for all types of people.
