The citizens too are equally grateful and enthusiastic in displaying
their pure devotion by spending lacs of rupees on festival days for conducting
pujas on a grand scale and proving wssorthy of her vatsalya. About the origin of
the temple, there are several versions. Legends are many, but claims are
contradictory Mata Kanakadurga according to one Purana emerged into this world
by the power of penance of sailasakthi, a mainfestation of Indrakila hill itself
to relieve the people from asura meanace. And another version affirms that this
holy shrine is one among the eighteen Sakthipeethas, and she is one of the forms
of Sakti. Padma Purana proclaims that Kanakadurga is a mainfestation of Parvathi.
Such accounts are contless, all but eulogising her glory through several legends.
