This
is a hill temple of great antiquity said to have been visited by Bhima, the
second of Pandava brothers, whose strength Herculean and dare-devilry unparalleled
is widely known. He became the father of Gatothkaj, who outstepped
him not only in
muscular strength but in supernatural powers too. That hero of heroes was born
to Bhima and Hidimbi couple only after
worshipping this Matrumata. In the primeval period it was a forest region ruled
by Hidimba, an asura of ferocious type, besides possessing awe-some mayopyas. It
was appropriately
named Hidimba Van. Bhima during the period of vanavasa was constrained to roam
about in this area and fight against this demon. The end of course, ended in his
marrying Hidimbi the sister of the slain Hidumba, according to his death wish.
Hence, its antiquity can be pushed back to Dwapara yuga or even to earlier
period.
The Osan hill is unusually big occupying about I2km in
area and atop it lies Martumata shrine in a cave. It is 850 feet in height.
There is a big tank atop called by the name of Hidumba tank and its specialty lies in not getting dried up in any season. The present temple was built only a
century back with the growth of its popularity due to Mother's powers started
drawing unending streams of devotees.
