The
cause of emergence of this holy shrine has a long, fantastic legend. And it
teaches humanity that frivolousness meets with due punishment sooner or later.
According to Purana, once Mother Parvathi out of share fun closed the eyes of
Parameswar in a sportive manner. Soon the fourteen worlds plunged into pitch
darkness and jeevakoti shuddered at its sudden onset, for the two eyes of Siva
are the Sun and Moon. There was absolute chaos in the world. Hearing the piteous
wails of animate world, and realising the cause, Lord Siva cursed Parvathi to go
to Bhuloka and meditate under Ekambara tree as an act of punishment. Parvathi
had no alternative Commission never goes Scot free, committed even by the
highest, either for jest or test.
At
once she came down to amaraaranyam - mango grove or Mangadu and started
meditation on the Lord with Panchakshari mantra surrounded by Panchagnis - five
kinds of fire. After completing, she went to Kacchiyampadi temple on the bank of
Kamba river to offer prayers to Sivalinga.
