THE
HISTORIC EVIDENCE
In
the temple history of Dakshnapatha, the Vijayanagara Kingdom has
carved out for itself an outstanding, multi-splendoured niche, which
" the eye has not seen, nor the ear heard of such spectacular
one anywhere in the world. Its glory touched the zenith during
Krishna Devaraya's time. He was a Sahiti Samarangana Chakravarthi,
and his patronage to plastic arts was second to none, but to
himself. Many remarkable temples adorned with matchless sculptural
marvels came into existence. Their glorious history, though in ruins
is remaining as example of examples. Among the temples of great fame
built during then, the Lepakshi temple has a conspicuous place. It
stands as a specimen of Vijayanagara style of architecture, a byword
for excellence.
Though
he is not the builder, or the cause of its construction overtly or
covertly, it is designed after the model he established and
patronised , And what is more the entire cost was met from his State
Revenue.
