HIS
BIRTH AND EDUCATION
Parasurama's
incarnation has a fitting setting - an illustrious Maharshi Jamadagni for
father, and equally illustrious brahmin turned kshatria Renuka, daughter of
Prasenajit of the Ikshavaku clan for mother. And the heart of mother Nature for
his dwelling. A product of inimitable austerity and impeccable chastity. So his
possessing the traits diametrically opposite with each another and that won for
him the whole of Bharat Khand which he gifted away, reserving nothing except a
Kamandal etc. When came of age, he mastered all the branches of knowledge and
blossomed into a model son of a model father. Though acquired proficiency in the
Vedic sastras, he had a special preference for astras. He went to Gandhamadhana
mountain, propitiating the Lord of Kailas he did intense tapa. Lord Siva,
pleased with his austere life gave as many astras he desired along with the
formidable battle axe - Parasu. Granting all, Lord Siva arranged for a mock
battle with him to test his powers. It was a stiff fight and in the end the
pupil emerged victorious after really delivering a death blow on his master's
forehead with his parasu. Greatly gratified, the All- compassionate Siva taking
it humorously called himself 'Khanda Parasu'.
