Mathura -
Birla Krishna Mandir
Among the scores of worth-seeing and well-built mandirs for Krishna, Birla
mandir is one meriting indispensable visitation. This was built by Shri Bal Dro
Dasji Birla in 1945. The imposing life-size idol of Krishna is made of white
marble with Sudarsan in the right and Conch in the left is quite enchanting.
Kirthana programmes are given here top priority. The court-yard in front of,the
garbhagiiha is quite spacious and can hold hundreds of bakthas to participate in
the community singing. The paneled walls narrate many lilas of boy Krishna and
Gopikaramana. Their colour and craftsmanship drive home bhaktibhava effectively
To the left of the temple there is a shrine illustrating the episode of
Govardhanagiri and the idol is extremely enchanting. The walls are inscribed
with the text of Bhagavadgita, and the temple complex serves the visitors in
multifarious ways, like selling puja materials, portraits and snacks. A
Dharmasala lies opposite, and is equipped with modern amenities.
It
lies on the Mathura-Brindavan road of the Mathura city in the state of Gujarat.
