Victory is
certain, O mind!
Away with false fear,
Devotion bears its fruit.
Shoulders we have,
Broad and strong,
And intelligence.
We can gather what we work for.
Unalterable law protects
Our efforts unflagging.
Away then with fear and despondency!
Thus has Subramania Bharati sung in Tamil the creed of freedom that is postulated in
Vedanta. Freedom is not taken away but secured by unchangeable law. Law, and not a
capricious monarch, is the best guarantee that honest effort can ask for.The pious Christian may here feel a doubt. If karma is inescapable
and the sinful must go through what they have unfortunately earned, then is there no room
for grace? Yes, there is! Grace comes through penitence; it is not a mere caprice of the
Lord. There is large and definite room in Vedanta for penitence and prayer and therefore
for Grace. |
