True penitence
being the active triumph of
the better over the worse, liberation has automatically taken place. Penitence is as much
action as sin and represents the souls victory over its own immediate past. It is
indeed victory felt by the inner spirit contemporaneously during the battle it self. If
the doctrine of relief through penitence is not a charter for mere ritual or hypocrisy, it
is as much an inherent part of Vedanta as of Christianity or any other faith. Sin is worked out in karma through the true sorrow and pain suffered
by the penitent sinner. Ritual may help the determination not to sin again but it cannot
by itself take the place of true sorrow. Vedanta offers to a sinful world tile same way
out as the Christian doctrine of repentance does.
There could be and there is no difference here. In deed the
Vedantic literature on grace is voluminous and positive. The Vaishnavite cults
specially emphasize the doctrine of repentance and Grace. But it is not peculiar to the
Vaishnavite cults. |
