A little later
Humayun had sent his teen-aged son along with Bairamkhan to Punjab to fight his
enemies there. Humayun died when his son was away and the mantle of kingship fell on young
Akbar's shoulders. In the meantime an ex-ruler tried to grab the kingdom. Akbar had to
give battle to his army and defeat it before assuming power which he did. As he was a
minor, Bairamkhan ruled as Akbar's regent.
The path of kings is never strewn with roses. When Akbar came of age, he wanted to assume
full rulership, but Bairamkhan resisted, and so, Akbar had to defeat him and send him away
to Mecca. On the way, however, Bairamkhan was killed by his enemies. |
