THE GUPTA AGE |
|
In the matter
of administration, there were many good features. The dominion was divided into a number
of provinces
and sub-divided into districts and villages. These were administered by governors,
district officers and lower officials. It was during his reign that the Chinese traveller
Fa-hien visited India. He has recorded in his travel account that the government
interfered very little with the activities of the subjects who were allowed to follow
professions of their choice and left the initiative in people's hands. Taxes were very
moderate. Roads were safe for travel and rest houses had been built on the highways. |
