THE GUPTA AGE |
|
As it happened,
the Dharmasastras became the most powerful regulating agency encompassing as they did the
whole of human life and conduct from the cradle to the grave. They provided the basis of
an orderly Indian society, prescribing its social norms, laws of inheritance, civil and
criminal justice. By a flexible functioning they brought all strata of society into a bond
of unity.
Sanskrit language with its rich vocabulary and unparalleled usage became the golden thread
of unity between the different parts of the country. It was spoken and understood from one
end of the country to the other. The best thoughts of the times were written in and spread
through that language. Inscriptions were written in that language. |
