THE UNITY OF RELIGION AND
RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE |

Orthodox
Christianity and Islam do not aim at union with God or even consider it to be possible.
The Christian goal is to go to heaven, generally with a resurrected physical body, and
then dwell in the eternal presence of God and Jesus (who also dwell in a resurrected
physical body). The Muslim goal is similar, to go to heaven. God-realization or
Self-realization in the Hindu sense is not the goal of these religions and may be regarded
as delusions by them. Even a number of mystics, including some Hindu Bhakta traditions,
have as their goal not complete union with god but nearness, proximity or being in the
same world with Him with some sort of subtle or divine body.
In addition, all religions do not follow the same practices or subscribe to the same
ethics, though they all generally stress some idea of the good or holy. For example, the
non-violence of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain thought is not accepted by some religions, which
regard it as a form of cowardice. |
