THE UNITY OF RELIGION AND
RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE |
|
We should be
friendly and just with those who have different religious or political views than
ourselves, or we are not even kind people, much less spiritual. We should recognize the
different levels and temperaments of people and their different views of reality, and that
there will always be a number of different types of religions among human beings.
Proclaiming that all religions are one, however, fails to deal with the reality of the
differences between them. It tries to whitewash them, when a number of them cannot be
reconciled. For example, the law of Karma and the cycle of rebirth is either a fact for
all people and the idea of sin or salvation leading to an eternal heaven or hell is wrong,
or vice versa. Both are not merely different words for the same truth. Pretending that all
religions are the same does not really eliminate these differences. It tries to ignore the
differences. It tries to ignore the differences in order to create tolerance. Such a
tolerance will eventually break down when the reality of the differences is discovered. |
