THE UNITY OF RELIGION AND
RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE |
|
On the other
hand, if we recognize that there are major differences between religions and allow for
freedom in human religious inquiry, then such differences need not become a problem. The
clash of ideas in the pursuit of Spiritual Truth, like the clash of ideas in science or
philosophy, does not have to become a factor of social conflict, nor do we have to try to
stifle it is order to maintain social harmony, which is only to suppress our own
intelligence.
What brings about real tolerance is allowing different views to exist, not pretending that
such differences do not exist. The point is that society should tolerate all religions
even if all religions are not one and even if some religions are wrong, and that in
society we ourselves should tolerate all regions even if we individually may not agree
with them and may oppose them intellectually. What cannot be tolerated is violence
used to promote a particular belief, which destroys all tolerance. |
