THE
HINDU RENAISSANCE AT A TURNING POINT |
|
The
Hindu renaissance has yet to succeed in its real aim, which is to
awaken the world spiritually. It could not do this because it failed
in awakening India itself. It must not forget this aim. After its
first stage, which had both its strengths and weaknesses, a second
stage is required. The first stage, on the positive side, was the
awakening of the tradition, its expansion to the world, and its
formulation along universal lines, but, on the negative side, it was
a fragmentation into personality cults and naive attempts to cater
to other religious beliefs.
Fortunately there are signs today of a greater
Hindu awakening and the second stage of this movement may already be
beginning. There is a renewed interest not only in Yoga and Vedanta,
but also in Sanskrit, Ayurveda and Vedic science in general. A new
view of ancient India is being pioneered that once more validates
the antiquity and indigenous nature of Vedic knowledge and culture
going back over five thousand years. There is a search for a new
Hindu economics that does not breed wasteful consumption, and a
Hindu view of ecology that shows us how to live in harmony with the
Earth and all her creatures.
Hindu political parties are gaining in strength
and may soon come to power to rule the country. Young Hindus are
taking up the call and idealism of Hindu Dharma. But the decisive
turn has perhaps yet to be made. |
